About Asian Sloppy Joe Recipe
What I like about this recipe is it emphasizes the Asian ingredients that make up its name, "Asian Sloppy Joe Sandwich."
Hoisin sauce plays a significant role in making this dish with the help of other condiments to give a touch of Asian flavors.
Asian sloppy joe sandwich takes the form of an almost burger-like appearance. Hence, we love to eat it at dinner time when my whole family is complete.
Why We Love This Recipe
Here are some of the reasons why my family and I like this recipe:
- The steps are quick to follow and would not take much time to finish!
- This Asian Sloppy Joe Sandwich is filled with luscious goodness that will make your mouth water.
- Suitable for lunch or dinner.
Ingredients
Let’s talk about the ingredients you will need to gather to make the sloppy joy sandwich and the slaw topping.
- Toasted Sesame Oil: It has a strong toasty, nutty aroma and flavor that will work well in preparing the sloppy joe.
- Onion and Garlic: Chopped onion and minced garlic add natural flavor to the ground beef once sauteed.
- Ground Beef: What is a burger sandwich without well-grounded meat? Once seasoned rightly, grounded beef with more fat content will be softer and juicier.
- Ketchup: It has a touch of sourness that could go well with the grounded beef and other condiments.
- Hoisin Sauce: This sandwich wouldn't be called Asian without Hoisin Sauce. This sauce has a thick and fragrant texture and is commonly used in Chinese and Vietnamese dishes to add sweetness and saltiness, which is why it suits sloppy joe very well.
- Soy Sauce: Another essential Asian ingredient I use a lot in my recipes, soy sauce, gives the dish an umami flavor and helps season the ground beef.
- Brown Sugar: It will counteract the sour or sweet flavors of the sloppy joe.
- Apple Cider Vinegar: Apple cider will help in adding a slightly sweet kick to the sauce.
- Sesame Seeds: Drizzle these on top of the joe to give a more nutty flavor and crunchy texture.
- Green Onions: Don't let cabbage be the only green in your dish! Sprinkle some thinly sliced onions as well!
- Sesame Buns: Envelop the thick and savory sloppy joe with these nutty-flavored buns.
For The Slaw
- Salt + Ground Black Pepper: A natural way of seasoning dishes is the combo of these two.
- Shredded Cabbage: Cabbage will not only give you a crunchy texture, but it will also provide a pleasant appearance as the sloppy joe's topping.
- Mayonnaise: To make a creamy slaw.
- Lime Juice: With an acidic taste and sweetness, lime juice is just about an excellent condiment to the toppings.

Variations & Substitutions
- Grapeseed oil is the best substitute for toasted sesame oil since it is flavorless and would allow the other ingredients to stand out.
- If I don't have green onion in my fridge, I usually sprinkle diced celery instead.
How To Make Asian Sloppy Joe Sandwich?
Saute onion and garlic: In a large skillet, heat sesame oil over medium heat, add chopped onion and cook for 1-2 minutes or until it becomes tender, then stir in the garlic and saute for 30 seconds more
Cook the beef: Add the ground beef, use a spoon to break up the beef and cook for 5-6 minutes until it becomes brown, drain the excess fat.
Add the condiments: Add soy sauce, ketchup, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, salt, pepper and apple cider vinegar. Lower the heat and cook for 4-5 minutes or until the mixture thickens, then turn off the heat.
Prepare the slaw: First, you need to shredded the cabbage or cut very thinly, then put it in a mixing bowl and mix in salt, pepper, mayonnaise and lime juice.
Make the sandwich: Add 2-3 tablespoons of sloppy joe to the bottom half of each bun. Sprinkle sesame seeds and green onion, then top with the coleslaw and the other half of the bun.
Tip: My secret for making smooth and grease-free sloppy joy is to drain the meat from any excess fat or oil after browning the beef.
Top Tips!
- Heat the sesame buns in a pan with melted butter for more flavor.
- Saute the onion and garlic in medium-low heat to avoid burning them and giving a bitter taste to the sloppy joe. Only adjust the heat to over medium when you have already added the grounded beef.
Serving Suggestions
Roasted Green Beans and Carrots or Buttered Peas go well with Sloppy Joe Sandwich in my family dinner.
If I serve this sandwich at lunchtime, I usually pair it with Homemade Pizza Fries or Spicy Potato Salad. Orange juice is a good beverage too.

Can I replace hoisin sauce with oyster sauce?

No, not in this recipe. Oyster sauce is not suitable for this recipe; it will give a different taste.
