The Origin of Muffins and Its Varieties

Muffins are small and circular bread that is usually similar to cupcakes when it comes to their physical appearance. It has a sweet taste and is usually served warm for a better experience. The term muffin came from the French word "moufflet".

Despite having been derived from a French word, muffins are not of French origin. Muffins are typically American and British specialties. The British muffins became famous because young men would usually sell them on the streets using decorated carts in the 19th century. British muffins typically have a flat shape and a hollow inside, which is different from the American muffins that have a cupcake-like shape since they were cooked in a muffin pan.

It was the Americans who decided that you can mix fruits with muffins. People in Minnesota made muffins with blueberry fillings. Meanwhile, there are people in Massachusetts who gave rise to corn muffins. New York is also known for its apple muffins. Eventually, many more variations came up until we get to the point wherein banana and strawberry got included in the recipe.

    Recipe FAQs

How ripe should the bananas be?

Find the ripest banana you can ever find, those which already have dark spots and are almost bruised since they have a sweeter and stronger banana flavor than your plain ole yellow bananas. This level of ripeness could also add to the moist texture of the muffins. Use a fork to mash them.

    Should the strawberries be fresh?

You may use fresh or frozen strawberries, depending on which is available. Nothing changes if you use either of them.

How do you store whole wheat muffins?

In the initial days, you may store them at room temperature, in a bag or container, for 1-2 days. However, if you want to keep them longer than 2 days, refrigerate them already and just reheat them when you plan to serve them again.
