    What causes tooth discoloration?

Let's take a look at what caused discoloration before we talk about any teeth whitening products. Most commonly, people experience extrinsic discoloration. This means that the outer layer of the tooth called the enamel has become discolored. Usually, this is due to daily habits that take effect on our teeth. Eating is often associated with yellowing teeth, as it is a daily activity in which certain foods and beverages affect our teeth. Some other bad habits can include smoking and chewing tobacco, which greatly affect the yellowing of our teeth.

On the other hand, there is another type of discoloration that is not as commonly seen. Intrinsic discoloration is when the yellowing is located within the tooth. This is usually caused by medications, illnesses, or tooth trauma. More often than not, professional bleaching is required for the discoloration to disappear.

Foods and beverages the cause stains

Now that you know what caused tooth yellowing let us see what foods and beverages you need to avoid to maintain a white smile. Starting off with many people's favourite morning drink, black coffee. This hot beverage is usually a daily drink for most; thus, its constant consumption can cause yellowed and stained teeth. Red wine has staining abilities as it usually leaves a slight red tone on the teeth. Additionally, you should also, minimize the intake of dark drinks such as black tea and coca-cola. When it comes to food, very pigmented edibles are usually the most common teeth enemies. Also, you should avoid food colouring. Additionally, red sauces and curry can also cause slight colouring so, it is preferred to consume it less frequent. Finally, to our surprise natural fruits and vegetables such as beets and blueberries can give you yellow teeth.

If you have a hard time going through the day without your daily cup of black coffee or craving, no need to worry. Small continuous amounts will not have such a drastic impact. Another option is to find an alternative to your craving. If you want a glass of red wine, why not try white? Or a bowl of strawberries instead of blueberries.

    Treatments for teeth whitening

There are plenty of options available on the market when it comes to teeth whitening treatments. Starting off with the most professional options, laser bleaching and tray whitening are the first techniques that come to mind. Laser bleaching is a professional treatment that is usually done by a licensed dentist. This treatment involves applying a concentrated gel to the teeth, which, become active when using a laser machine. Usually, patients with very discolored teeth or intrinsic discoloration do this treatment, as it is very intensive. On the other hand, the tray whitening method is an effective at-home treatment. Patients need an appointment at a dentist's office, where they create custom made personalized mouthguards.

Then they give patients a special gel which, they place it into the mouth guard and wear the mouthguard over a while. Usually, this method is very effective but expensive and time-consuming.

    Useful products for teeth whitening

Now that we have gone over the professional teeth whitening methods let's take a look at some of the over-the-counter products that anyone can use. Whitening pens and strips work on a similar basis as they both have a gel coat that is applied to the teeth. Once you have brushed over your teeth with the pen or applying a stip, waiting for about 5-20 minutes and then rinsing, is all you need to do. You can repeat this procedure as many times as you need until you get the results you want. Some other popular products for teeth whitening is toothpaste and mouthwash. Even Though these two products are not as effective as the rest, they can work to remove any stain marks on the teeth slightly.

Natural ways to whiten your teeth

If you are looking for a more natural way to whiten your teeth, you will be excited to know that there are many safe ways to do so. Eating fruits such as strawberries and pineapple, or rubbing a banana peel on your teeth, are wonderful to whiten slightly stained teeth. Also brushing your teeth with crushed activated charcoal or soda is a popular old method of teeth whitening that many swear by. Finally, rinse your teeth with some diluted apple cider vinegar or coconut oil to get those yellow stains out of your teeth.
