    Baked Sweet Potatoes in Foil

You will be surprised by how delicious, tender, and sweet the insides of these baked sweet potatoes are, and you will be even more amazed by how crisp the outside layer is.

I love this fluffy and soft texture of baked sweet potatoes, making it an excellent recipe to prepare again and again. I serve baked sweet potatoes as a side dish for meat or other veggie dishes, a satiating snack or a standalone dish for a light lunch.

Baking your sweet potatoes in foil not only ensures a better taste and texture of the dish but would also quicken the time of baking in the oven.

Enjoy deliciously tender baked sweet potatoes by following the steps of this recipe, and you will never regret doing so once you get to taste the final result.

    Why Does this Recipe Work?

    • This is a two-ingredient recipe.
    • A healthy comfort food.
    • This dish is an excellent addition to your barbecue dinner!
    • Let your kids enjoy root vegetables like this sweet potato in a more delicious way.
    • A vegan-friendly dish you can enjoy!

    Ingredients

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

Sweet Potato. Beaureguard is the most popular type of sweet potato in the world, and it is also the perfect one to use in baking because it is sleek with a long and skinny size which allows for a quicker baking time.

Tip: It is best to use the long and skinny-sized sweet potatoes instead of the rounder and bigger ones since those tend to bake longer in the oven.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It is the perfect cooking oil to use for making your baked sweet potato crisp on the outside and somewhat fluffy and soft on the inside.

How to Bake Sweet Potatoes in the oven?

Tip: Sweet potatoes are root vegetables, which means they grow underneath the ground. Hence, it is best to thoroughly wash them before you begin using them for baking!

steps of making the recipe by photos

    Preheat your oven to 400F / 200C.

Prepare the sweet potatoes: Wash the sweet potato well, and then pat them dry with a paper towel.

Tip: Drying or patting your sweet potatoes dry with a paper towel as fully as you can is important in this situation so that the outer part of the sweet potato will become crisp and firm instead of soggy and drenched.

Now use a fork to poke holes in the sweet potato in different locations.

Brush the sweet potato with the oil.

Wrap them in foil: Wrap the sweet potatoes separately in aluminium foil sheets (don’t wrap it too tightly).

Tip: Make sure that the foil is wrapped tightly all over the sweet potato to prevent the sweet potato from drying out. The foil keeps all moisture within the sweet potato so it will be tender and fluffy instead of all-out dry.

Bake in the oven: Bake the sweet potato in the preheated oven for an hour. Remove from the oven and let it cool, then open the foil and cut the sweet potato lengthwise.

Use a fork to pull the pulp away from the skin. Serve and enjoy!

Different Ways To Cook Sweet Potatoes

    • I used to boil sweet potatoes; It wasn't the best way to cook them as I didn't like the texture, and that is why I had to learn how to bake sweet potatoes in the oven.
    • You may cook the sweet potato in your instant pot; however, you need to adjust the cooking time accordingly.
    • You can cook in the microwave. However, the texture will be different as well.

    Variations

    • Add some salt to the poked holes you have created with the fork. It adds flavor to the sweet potato.
    • Once you have cut the baked sweet potato lengthwise, drizzle it with some sour cream for more taste.
    • To make baked sweet potato cubes, just cut the sweet potatoes into cubes and follow the exact instructions.

    Serving Suggestions

I like to serve these baked sweet potatoes in foil with Chicken nuggets for a simple lunch or dinner. The yummy, tender, sweet, and soft taste of this dish is simply too perfect for almost any chicken dish.

    Storage

To store: It is best to serve this dish fresh from the oven. You can refrigerate it for 3-4 days in an airtight container.

To freeze: You can freeze sweet potato for up to 3 months as long as it is stored in an airtight container. You can also freeze it with or without the skin. Just allow the sweet potato o cool before putting it in the freezer.

Reheating: Reheat in the oven at 275 degrees for 10-15 minutes, or in the microwave for 1-2 minutes.

    Recipe FAQs

Can I bake sweet potatoes without foil?

Yes, however, wrapping a sweet potato in foil helps keep the skin softer and makes the sweet potatoes tender and fluffy.

How long does it take to bake sweet potatoes?

Bake sweet potatoes in the oven at 400 degrees for 45-60 minutes. If you use small sweet potatoes, it will take about 30-35 minutes, while baking larger ones take more than an hour.
