This easy Chocolate Fridge Cake, also called ‘Malteser Tiffin’, is a recipe you must try out! This no bake Scottish dessert is a kind of cake that hardens in the fridge rather than being baked soft in the oven.
The drizzle of the bittersweet chocolate topping gives way to a crunch of digestive biscuits and Malteser engulfed by a buttery sweetness with some more bittersweet hints of rich chocolate.

For the topping
- White Chocolate. To drizzle on top of the base, which will add a sweet, buttery flavour with subtle hints of vanilla and fresh milk.
- Dark Chocolate. Dark chocolate, as mentioned earlier, will balance out the intense sweetness that you will be biting into with its slightly bitter flavour.
How To Make Chocolate Fridge Cake?
- Line a baking pan (20 cm) with parchment paper.
- In a microwave-safe bowl, Place the tiffin's dark chocolate and milk, butter and golden syrup and microwave for 30-second.
- Allow to cool completely for about 10-20 minutes.
Place the biscuits and maltesers in a large bowl and stir. - In a mixing bowl, mix together crushed digestives biscuits and Maltesers and then pour over the chocolate mixture, mix well until combined.
- Now, Transfer the mixture to the baking pan, and press down firmly with the back of a measuring cup. Put in the fridge.
To make the topping
- Microwave the dark and white chocolate in two separate bowls for 30 seconds to melt.
Now, pour spoons of the dark and white chocolate over the tiffin and use a skewer to create a marble effect. - Scatter over the Maltesers and put the pan in the fridge again for 2-3 hours.
- Cut the tiffin into bars.
Top Tips!
- You may make Malteser Tiffin cups by pressing the mixture into 12 muffin tin cups lined with a muffin liner.
- Use a large, sharp knife to cut the Tiffin. Hold it for a while under hot, boiling water. This will ensure that you cut smoothly through the chocolate topping.
- Make sure that you are melting the butter and golden syrup mixture in short bursts to avoid burning of the chocolate. Keep stirring in between, and you should be good to go. Microwaving in one go will cause the chocolate to go grainy and will spoil the texture of the entire dish.
- If the Malteser has become too hard to cut straight out of the fridge, allow it to come to room temperature by letting it sit for around 30 minutes.
- Check if the Tiffin is completely set before cutting it. It will end up in a mess if it is still loose in places.
Some Variations
- The golden syrup can be substituted with maple syrup or honey.
- Adding a bit of condensed milk to the base mix will give you a slightly chewier texture. So, go for it if that is what you want.
- If you do not get Maltesers in your country, you can go for Whoppers or Mighty Malts or any other chocolate coated malt balls. Crunchies or Kitkats are also a good option.
- You can add Rice Bubbles or Rice Krispies to add a chewy texture to your recipe.
- You can use extra Maltesers to decorate the Tiffin.
- Add raisins, dried fruit or chocolate raisins in this recipe, and honestly, it tastes delicious. So, that is something that you might want to try if you are a fan of dried fruits. Nuts are a great addition too.
