Where did Chocolate Milk Tea Originate?

Chocolate milk tea, anyone? It doesn't matter if it's served hot or cold; this delicious dessert has become a sweet staple all around the world. It is astonishing to learn that the seemingly simple combination of milk, tea, and chocolate can be traced back to the Caribbean. Historians now can trace the origins of the original mixture all the way back to Jamaica.

Sir Hans Sloane, an Irish botanist, is credited with developing the recipe, according to the British Natural History Museum. Sloan spent time in Jamaica during the 1700s and wrote about sipping a cocoa drink that the natives had given him. It was nauseous though, according to the museum's description, and mixing it with milk improved its taste. The brilliant concept of combining cocoa and milk was brought back to England by Sloane when he returned from his trip to Europe. A long time passed before the mixture was introduced as a pharmaceutical.

Jamaicans continue to appreciate their traditional chocolate tea recipe, which combines sweetened condensed milk with spices such as a cinnamon leaf, nutmeg, and pimento to create a delicious drink.

What's in This Chocolate Milk Tea Recipe?

Milk. There are no strict guidelines as to what type of milk you should use for this recipe. However, whole milk is known to make a creamy, milky, and thick consistency, so using it in this recipe would be the best choice.

Water. An essential ingredient in this recipe, no matter how simple it may be. The water also serves as a toner for the other ingredients so that the recipe will not turn out to be too sweet nor too bland.

Tea. This recipe calls for black tea, which will give your Chocolate Milk Tea a characteristic dark and malty flavor because of the tannins in the tea. Instead of being grassy or fresh like green tea, it has a rich aroma that is slightly nutty and definitely assertive, which will blend well with the chocolatey flavor of this recipe to create a delicious combination.

Chocolate. Many of us love chocolates as much as we love tea, so what better it is than to use and add actual chocolate into our tea mixture? You may use any of your favorite chocolate bars in making this recipe.

Cocoa Powder. The cocoa powder in this recipe will help the melted chocolate in giving your tea its most significant chocolatey flavor.

Brown Sugar. Sweeten this recipe with a scoop or two of brown sugar. It also helps in texturing the cocoa and milk mixture to become thicker and creamier.
