    Karkade (Hibiscus Iced Tea)

    Published: Oct 10, 2024 by Radwa ·

As an Egyptian, Karkade is the drink I usually make when I need a refreshing herbal tea on summer days.

I make Karkade by steeping water with dried petals of the hibiscus flower, which is SUPER DELICIOUS!

    Karkade (hibiscus tea).

    Karkade (Hibiscus Tea)

I LOVE the deep red color and the sweet and tart taste of Karkade. This herbal tea drink is SOO popular in Africa, especially in countries like Egypt and Sudan.

The first time I came across this drink, I thought it was a cranberry drink, and when I tasted it, I noticed the difference.

In my house, we like to make iced Karkade A LOT.

I also make iced hibiscus tea every day during Ramadan as a refreshing drink during Iftar.

Sometimes I like to have hot hibiscus tea. In this case, I serve it hot, and I usually make just 1-2 cups of water.

    You'll Need

    Karkade (hibiscus tea) ingredients.

You will need only 3 ingredients:

    • Water
    • Dried hibiscus flowers
    • Granulated sugar

All the measurements are in the recipe card.

Steep the tea. In a small pot, add the water and the dried hibiscus flowers and bring to a boil.

Keep boiling for 5-10 more minutes over high heat, then turn the heat off.

Set a fine-mesh strainer over a large bowl. Pour the tea through the strainer.

Strain. Set a fine-mesh strainer over a large bowl. Pour the tea through the strainer and then discard the hibiscus flowers.

Add the sugar: Add the sugar and stir until dissolved, then let it cool completely.

Chill. Pour the hibiscus tea into a bottle or jug using a funnel, then refrigerate until cold and serve. Enjoy!
