This Palm Springs date shake is made with Medjool dates, peanut butter, vanilla ice cream and milk; it is super delicious, easy to prepare and perfect for breakfast or to drink during the day as a snack.

Date shake is a famous and standardized smoothie in Palm Springs, California. The thick, rich, and creamy texture of the shake came from the smooth blended ice cream combined with the ingredients.

    Date Shake Recipe

Date Shake has a naturally sweet taste with hints of caramel and vanilla undertone. It is a perfect smoothie in the morning since consuming a glass will keep anyone full for at least until lunchtime. But, one can also drink it during midday as a snack, which most people prefer.

Date Shake is a perfect drink since it is easy to make, and it also offers good health benefits. There is no added sugar to it, so almost all of the ingredients are natural and taste-efficient.

From Medjool dates to ice cream, all the recipe ingredients ensure nothing but the best shake experience one can ever wish for in a day.

This recipe will not only include the easy way of concocting the shake. It will also give simple ideas on what to serve the shake with, along with other tips to make the shake experience worthwhile.

Date Shake Delight: Dating Back to 30s

Matthew Rowley wrote on the first of May just this year that the hot and low humidity in the southern part of California is an ideal place for Phoenix dactylifera to grow. Phoenix dactylifera is where the fruit of dates came from. In the year 1930, a man named Russell Nicoll eventually put the fruits in a newer way.

That year was too hot even for Californian standards. Many wanted to stave off the heat in any way possible. Then, Nicoll decided to add chopped dates to a vanilla milkshake. That’s when the delicious date shake was born. What’s impressive about this creation is the fact that it did not only keep the heat at bay. The caramel taste of the shake also became famous that many consider it a must-try when you visit Palm Springs.

    Why Does This Recipe Works?

Shakes have many variations, but this particular shake recipe compares to nothing for the following reasons:

    • Date Shake is healthy to serve for children and adults alike.
    • The shake will keep a person feel full until the next meal.
    • It is easy to prepare any time of the day.

    What's in This Recipe?

    • Medjool Dates: Medjool dates are fresh fruit with a unique taste to them. This particular type of date has a rich and soft, chewy texture. The fruit tastes like caramel, not too sweet but not too mild either, excellent for the shake.
    • Milk: One can use any milk in this recipe, but the most recommended is the whole milk since it is creamier and a little thicker, suitable to texture the shake, which the other type of milk can't do. The nutty flavor and light texture of almond milk will also complement the taste of Medjool dates in case whole milk is unavailable.
    • Peanut Butter: Rich with protein and washed with a salty and sweet taste, peanut butter will go well with the rest of the ingredients.
    • Vanilla Ice Cream: The heavenly creamy taste of the shake isn't complete without the vanilla ice cream. The vanilla flavor of the ice cream is mild and won't overwhelm the natural flavor of Medjool dates, making the perfect combo. The ice cream will also give the shake a thicker texture, so adding it is a must.
    • Ground Cinnamon: Add more flavoring to the bunch! Ground cinnamon's sweet, rich, and slightly bitter flavor will give the shake a punch hint of cloves, a rather exciting tone to the primary taste of the shake.
    • Salt: The recipe won't require this ingredient that much; one can skip adding it to the shake, but if you prefer to boost or enhance the flavor of the shake, feel free to add a pinch.
    • Ice Cubes: To keep the heat at bay, you need ice to battle it. Add a couple of ice cubes to perfect the refreshing shake.

How to Make Date Shake Recipe?

    Steps of making this recipe
    • Soak the dates for 2 hours, drain well.
    • Add the date and peanut butter to the food processor beat for 1-2 minutes.
    • Add in the milk, ice cream, salt, cinnamon and ice cubes, beat until smooth, pour this date shake into a cup or glass, sprinkle some cinnamon on top then serve.
milk, ice and vanilla ice cream.

    Top Tips!

    • Use a high-speed blender, so all the ingredients come out smoother without chunks and bumps.
    • You may soak the dates for 10 minutes in the water so they will be easier to blend.
    • To achieve a sweeter taste, add a drop of honey or vanilla extract, whichever is available.

    Recipe Variations

    • If you are vegan, the best milk to use for the recipe is almond milk; this won't change the taste of the shake at all.
    • Cinnamon might be hard to come by; adding clover or ginger instead will maintain the spice that cinnamon could have given.
    • If you serve Date Shake in the morning, adding chia seeds will help you feel fuller after drinking it. Chia seeds will also take on the flavor of the beverage, enhancing the taste of the shake.

    Serving Suggestions

In the morning, garlic bread goes well with Date Shake. The crisp texture and buttery garlic flavor of the bread will go well with the smooth and creamy shake. Date Shake with garlic bread is a simple pairing for a breakfast meal that will surely satisfy anyone.

A greasy plate of fries will also taste best with Date Shake during midday snack. It's always best to easy something fatty and oily food with a cold beverage.

    Recipe FAQs

Is it required to soften the Medjool date?

It is not required if you have a powerful food processor or blender. If not, softening the Medjool date will ensure a smoother texture of the shake without the existence of bumps. For a better texture, it is good to soak the dates for a couple of minutes before putting them in the blender.

Can I add Medjool dates to the shake without blending them to give it a solid texture?

Medjool dates are soft and chewable. They have a good caramel taste that has a hint of sweetness. Hence, it is no problem if you want to add pieces of Medjool dates to the shake. Children love to chew while drinking the shake anyway, so adding some solid Medjool dates would be ideal for this Date Shake recipe.
