This Medjool date shake recipe is inspired by the famous Palm Springs recipe. It is loaded with ice cream, super delicious and easy to prepare! Perfect for breakfast or to drink during the day as a snack.

Do you know that Date Shake is a famous Palm Springs, California beverage? The classic recipe calls for walnuts; however, I prefer peanut butter.

    About The Date Shake Recipe

Date Shake is my favorite drink in the morning since having a glass will keep me full for at least until lunchtime. But, also, sometimes I drink it during midday as a snack or dessert.

I love this shake because it is easy to make, and i don't have to add sugar to it since the date is naturally sweet.

Today, I am not only sharing the easy way of making a Date Shake, but I will also give simple ideas on what to serve the shake with, along with other tips to make the shake experience worthwhile.

    Why We Love This Recipe

Here is why my family and I love this recipe:

    • Suitable to serve for children and adults alike.
    • The shake will keep a person feel full until the next meal.
    • It is easy to prepare any time of the day.
    • Naturally sweet and delicious!

    Taste & Texture

Let's talk about the texture and taste of this shake:

Taste: Sweet with a with hints of caramel and vanilla undertone.

Texture: It has a thick, rich, and creamy texture of the shake came from the smooth blended ice cream combined with the ingredients.

    Ingredients

Let’s take a look at the ingredients you should have to make a date shake:

Medjool Dates: Medjool dates have a rich and soft, chewy texture and taste like caramel, not too sweet but not too mild either, excellent for the shake.

Milk: I prefer whole milk since it is creamier and a little thicker.

Peanut Butter: It goes well with the rest of the ingredients.

Vanilla Ice Cream: The vanilla flavor of the ice cream is mild and won't overwhelm the natural flavor of Medjool dates, making the perfect combo. The ice cream will also give the shake a thicker texture, so adding it is a must.

Ground Cinnamon: It adds sweet and woody flavor.

Salt: You may skip adding it to the shake, but if you prefer to boost or enhance the flavor.

Ice Cubes: To keep the heat at bay, you need ice to battle it. Add a couple of ice cubes to perfect the refreshing shake.

“See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.”

    Variations & Substitutions

    • Sometimes, if I don't have cinnamon at home, I add ground clove, nutmeg or ginger instead; whatever I have at home.
    • Substitute ice cream for Greek yoghurt or chia seeds.
    • Add in some fruits, such as strawberry, avocado or banana.

How to Make Date Shake Recipe?

Add the date and peanut butter and blend then add the remaining ingredients and blend again until smooth.

One: Soak the date in warm water for 20-30 minutes and then drain well.

Two: Add the date and peanut butter to the food processor beat for 1-2 minutes.

Three: Add in the milk, ice cream, salt, cinnamon and ice cubes, beat until smooth, pour it into a cup or glass, sprinkle some cinnamon on top then serve.

Tip: The key to a perfect smooth, thick date shake drink is to add a thickener such as ice cream and ice cubes, you may also add banana or chia seeds.

    Expert Tips!

    • Use a high-speed blender, so all the ingredients come out smoother without chunks and bumps.
    • To achieve a sweeter taste, add a few drops of honey or maple syrup, whichever is available.
    • Vegan & dairy-free: to make the recipe vegan or dairy-free, use almond milk instead of whole milk and chia seeds instead of ice cream.

    Serving Suggestions

I like to serve my Date Shake with Garlic Bread Grilled Cheese Sandwich for breakfast; I found that the crisp texture and buttery garlic flavor of the bread will go well with the smooth and creamy shake.

For lunch, This is so good with Coronation Chicken Sandwich or Crispy Fried Chicken Burger.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to soak the Medjool date?

It is not required if you have a powerful food processor or blender. If not, softening the Medjool date will ensure a smoother texture of the shake without the existence of bumps. For a better texture, it is good to soak the dates for a couple of minutes before putting them in the blender.

Also, If you use hard dates to make this shake, I recommend soaking them in warm water for at least 30 minutes to soften them.

Can I add Medjool dates chunks to the shake?

Medjool dates are soft and chewable. They have a good caramel taste that has a hint of sweetness. Hence, it is no problem if you want to add pieces of Medjool dates to the shake. Children love to chew while drinking the shake anyway, so adding some solid Medjool dates would be ideal for this Date Shake recipe.
