Black Pepper Beef Stir Fry is an easy Chinese recipe made with thinly sliced steak, onion, bell pepper, lots of ground black pepper and a delicious stir fry sauce. Super quick and easy to make and ready in less than 20 minutes!
Black Pepper Beef Stir Fry Recipe
I love how juicy, flavorful and tender this dish is. The thick sauce also makes it so much more satisfying and contributes to the richness of this dish.
I used sirloin beef steak to make this dish but also flank is a good option.
I also used 2 whole teaspoons of ground black pepper, and I thought it would be super hot, but actually, it wasn't that hot. Even my kids enjoyed it.
This recipe is seasoned and cooked with sliced bell peppers, soy sauce, and ginger and thickened with cornstarch. In my opinion, adding lots of black pepper really enhances the flavour of this dish significantly.
Ingredients
Note: This is an overview of the ingredients. See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
Steak. I highly recommend sirloin because it is suitable for quick cooking.
Ground Black Pepper. I highly recommend using freshly ground black pepper because it is the main flavour in this recipe.
Sunflower Oil. For frying the steak. You may use olive oil instead.
Onion and bell Pepper. I always like to use bell pepper and onion slices in any of my beef stir fry dishes.
Garlic and ginger: A flavoring agents.
For the stir-fry sauce: I used dark soy sauce, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, beef stock, and, of course, black pepper, and I also added cornflour to thicken the sauce a bit.
Note: Pair your ground black pepper with a few drops of honey for a sweet, sour, and hint of spice flavor.
How to Make Black Pepper Beef Stir Fry?
Make the sauce: In a jug or mixing bowl, combine soy sauce, cornflour, oyster sauce, beef stock, rice vinegar and 1 teaspoon of black pepper.
Tip: Be mindful of pouring soy sauce since it makes the texture runny. Add more cornstarch as well for a thicker consistency.
Prepare the beef: Wash the steak, pat dry with a paper towel, slice thinly, then toss with salt and the remaining 1 teaspoon ground black pepper.
Pro Tip: When cutting the steak into strips, recommend cutting it against the grain for the best texture.
Fry the steak: In a larger wok, half of the oil over high heat, add the steak, fry for 3 minutes or until browned (stir occasionally).
Transfer the steak to a plate and set it aside.
Fry the veggies: In the same wok, add the remaining oil, lower the heat to medium and add bell pepper and onion; fry until soften.
Add minced ginger and garlic, cook for 1 minute.
Now, add the sauce, stir until combined.
Add the steak back to the wok, stir well with the sauce, cook for 2-3 minutes, and then turn off the heat and serve.
Serving Suggestions
I LOVE to serve this dish over rice, either fluffy boiled rice or egg fried rice. For a more Asian dinner vibe, serve it with Chinese Lo Mein Noodles.
Can I Freeze This Black Pepper Beef?
Yes, Place the Black Pepper Beef in an airtight container before placing it inside the freezer for 1-2 months. Reheat it in the microwave.
