Yes, it is a recipe that is usually made for kids. But that does not mean adults cannot have it! Dippy Eggs have no age restriction! So, let’s dive right into the recipe and get your next breakfast-in-bed session sorted.

    Why Does This Recipe Work?

    • This recipe is ready to eat in as little as ten minutes!
    • The ingredients needed for the recipe are ones that are very common breakfast items and are already available in most households.
    • Eggs are loaded with nutrition. This is a great way to get the kids to eat their fair share of protein.

How To Make Dippy Eggs With Soldiers?

how to make the recipe by photos

Cut the toast into five strips, put them on a baking sheet, and bake for 5-10 minutes at 170C.

As soon as you take them out of the oven, brush them with butter and set them aside.

In the meantime, boil the eggs for 4-5 minutes, then remove them and put them in a pot or large bowl filled with cold water to stop the cooking process.

Now, use the back of a spoon to crack the top of the Egg and take it off.

Sprinkle a little salt and pepper into the egg yolk (optional).

    Serve it with the soldiers.

    Top Tips!

    • Make sure that eggs are at room temperature before you boil them. Take them out of the fridge at least half an hour before cooking them.
    • Make a small prick using a pin at the rounded end of the shell before boiling the eggs. This lets the steam escape, which prevents the eggs from cracking.
    • Eggs bought from a trusted place are the only ones that should be used to make this recipe. If you have any doubts regarding how organic the eggs are or have a weakened immune system, it would be best to stick to hard-boiled eggs.
    • Larger eggs take longer to boil. Thus, add a minute extra to the timer when putting them to boil.

    Some Variations

    • Instead of butter, you can explore the following spreads for your Soldiers:
    • Chop a few Anchovy Fillets and whip them into soft Butter. Garnish it with herbs of your choice and spread it on your hot toast.
    • Cheddar, Dijon Mustard, thinly sliced spring onions, and beaten Egg make for a sumptuous spread for the soldiers. This should be applied to the toast before baking it to allow the cheese to melt and the Egg to cook.
    • For a fancy breakfast, use dense rye bread and top it with whisked cream cheese. Add a little lemon zest and slices of smoked salmon, and get ready for a treat.
    • Mix together Gruyere, Dijon mustard, and crème fraiche. Season it with black pepper and salt. Spread the mixture on your toast and add cooked slices of ham for your own mini Croque monsieur.
    • Spreading sun-dried tomato paste on two slices of bread, adding a layer of vegan Chorizo to one of them, and pressing them together with a rolling pin is your cheap and easy ticket to Spain.
    • Grated Parmesan and Cilantro make for a great and simple topping.
    • Instead of Soldiers, you can also try dipping asparagus or carrots into the eggs for an interesting twist on the traditional bread Soldiers.

    Serving Suggestions

    • Place the Egg in an egg cup and serve it with Soldiers as soon as they are cooked. (Do not worry if you do not have an egg cup. Just use a shot glass or a measuring cup from your kitchen).
    • A hot cup of tea or coffee makes an absolutely delightful accompaniment to this recipe – be it as a teatime snack or as breakfast.
    • Kids will definitely love having a smoothie or a glass of freshly squeezed fruit juice alongside their Dippy Eggs and Soldiers.
    • Serving this dish alongside a platter of chopped fresh fruits is also a great option.

    Storage

Make-Ahead of Time: You can make the Soldiers ahead of time and store them, but not the eggs.

To Store: Wrap the toast in a paper towel and put it in a plastic bag or an airtight container. This helps retain the crispiness. You can put it in the fridge, where it will last for up to 24 hours. Make sure that the toast has cooled down before you put it in the container.

To Freeze: Unfortunately, neither the soldiers nor the eggs can be stored in the freezer.

Reheating Instructions: You can put the toast back into the oven and let it heat for around 5 minutes. Keep occasionally checking to ensure that it is not getting too crispy.

    FAQs

    What are dippy eggs?

Dippy Eggs are essentially soft-boiled eggs. They are cooked on both sides, and their top is cut off. They are usually served with toasted soldiers to be dipped into the warm, runny yolk and eaten.

How long does it take to make dippy eggs?

Since we would want our yolk to be runny, we do not boil them for long. Once your eggs have been lowered into the water and the water has come to a boil, they should be ready in about 4-5 minutes, as mentioned earlier. However, if you would prefer really soft-boiled yolk, your dippy eggs will be ready in 3 minutes. For hard-boiled eggs, 7 minutes are enough.

How much water do you put in a dippy egg?

To boil the eggs and make them into dippy eggs, you need to cover them with at least an inch (2.5 cm) of cold water.
