Ingredients
Note: This is an overview of the ingredients. See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
Butter: I use softened unsalted butter. If you’d like this recipe to be vegan, then you can consider using vegan butter.
Caster sugar: It is not as fine as confectioner’s sugar, but neither course as granulated. It’s somewhere in the middle.
Pro Tip: If you can't find Caster sugar, you can use a coffee grinder or food processor to grain granulated sugar a tad to caster sugar. Whilst grinding, make sure you don't grind it to a powder-like density. Keep in mind that we're aiming for something that falls between granulated and powdered sugar.
Self-raising flour: It’s got the baking powder and a tad-bit of salt already pre-mixed in.
How to Make Fork Biscuits?
Now to the part, you’ve been waiting for. Here’s how to make the easiest possible buttery biscuits ever:
Before you begin anything, preheat your oven to 180C / 360F. Then, line a large baking tray with parchment paper. Now, let's move on to preparing the dough.
One: Take out a large mixing bowl, in which you are going to whisk butter and sugar together until they are well combined. They should be of a creamy consistency.
Two: In this same bowl, gently stir in the flour until it is combined using a wooden spoon or spatula. You might want to go slow with this. Add a little flour, whisk, and then add a little more flour. Repeat this process, until all the flour has been added in.
Three: Now, take out small portions of the dough and roll small balls with it. The small balls should be roughly the size of a teaspoon.
Four: After all the dough has been rolled into small balls, place them on the lined baking tray and make sure to leave spaces in between whilst doing so. This is because the balls will be pressed down, and they need space to expand.
Five: Now, dip a fork in cold water and then press down on each ball, making an imprint. After all the dough balls have been pressed down, you can now transfer the tray to the oven.
Pro Tip: It is important to wet the fork to prevent it from sticking to the dough.
Six: Bake the dough balls in the preheated oven until they turn into beautiful golden brown biscuits. This will take around 12-15 minutes. Allow to cool on a wire rack.
Pro Tip: These cookies bake for 12-15 minutes, depending on your particular oven. They took exactly 12 minutes in my oven. Just watch for them to have slightly golden tops.
That’s it, your buttery biscuits are ready for devouring.
Top Tips!
- Before you begin prepping the dough, take out the butter from the fridge and set it on the counter for a couple of hours. This will ensure that the butter is at room temperature and will easily mix with the caster sugar.
- If you have trouble bringing the dough together. Then consider adding just a tiny bit of milk, and your dough should start sticking together.
- I don't recommend using granulated sugar at all. Actually, when I first attempted to make these cookies, I used granulated sugar, and the cookies turned out grainy.
Recipe Variations
- Add some white chocolate chips to the recipe for a subtle yet sweet surprise in every bite.
- You can also add the zest of one lemon to the biscuit dough to make your biscuits slightly flavoured and tangy.
- If you’re a chocolate lover, then you can go ahead and add some rich cocoa powder and possibly even some dark chocolate chips to make this a completely chocolaty haven.
- Pieces of dried fruit also taste great in every bite of these biscuits. I recommend raisins, cranberries, figs, and apricots.
- If you want to add warmth to these biscuits, consider adding earthy spices such as nutmeg, ginger and cinnamon.
Storage
Store: At room temperature, these Fork biscuits will last about a week. Though make sure it is in a sealed air-tight bag or container. In the fridge, they’ll last a couple more days, but not more than that.
Freeze: You can freeze these baked goodies in the freezer, and they’ll last for up to a month. Just make sure that you separate them with baking paper or any other paper in an air-tight container or bag.
Recipe FAQ

Yes, you can just add 1 teaspoon of baking powder and a pinch of salt to every cup of plain flour you will use.
For better results, I highly recommend using butter because it gives the shortbread its delicious taste and smell.
