Why does this recipe work?
- This simple recipe doesn't require any special equipment and is made with only 3 simple ingredients.
- The recipe is versatile. These simple fork biscuits recipe is plain and can be made with different flavours such as lemon, vanilla and chocolate.
- These buttery biscuits are so delicious and easy sweet treats for the whole family to enjoy.
- These biscuits are more like shortbread biscuits they are buttery and eggless (no eggs and no milk).
Ingredients
The three ingredients we were talking about are:
- Butter: Preferable Unsalted.
- Caster sugar: It is not as fine as Confectioner’s sugar, but neither course as granulated. It’s somewhere in the middle.
- Self-raising flour (plain flour): It’s got the baking powder and a tad-bit of salt already pre-mixed in.
How to make Fork Biscuits?
Now to the part, you’ve been waiting for. Here’s how to make the easiest possible buttery biscuits ever:
Before you begin anything, preheat your oven to 180C / 356F. Then, line a large baking tray with parchment paper. Once these initial steps are complete, you can move on to preparing the dough.
Take out a large mixing bowl, in which you are going to whisk butter and sugar together until they are well combined. They should be of a creamy consistency.
In this same bowl, gently stir in the flour until it is combined using a wooden spoon or spatula. You might want to go slow with this. Add a little flour, whisk, and then add a little more flour. Repeat this process, until all the flour has been added in.
Now, take out small portions of the dough and roll small balls with it. The small balls should be roughly the size of a teaspoon.
After all the dough has been rolled into small balls, place them on the lined baking tray and make sure to leave spaces in between whilst doing so.
This is because the balls will be pressed down, and they need space to expand.
Now, dip a fork in cold water and then press down on each ball, making an imprint.
After all the dough balls have been pressed down, you can now transfer the tray to the oven.
Bake the dough balls in the preheated oven until they turn into beautiful golden brown biscuits. This will take around 12-15 minutes. It could be more or less, depending on your particular oven. Just watch for them to have crisp golden tops. Allow to cool on a wire rack.
That’s it, your buttery biscuits are ready for devouring.
Top Tips!
- Before you begin prepping the dough, take out the butter from the fridge and set it on the counter for a couple of hours. This will ensure that the butter is at room temperature and will easily melt and mix with the caster sugar.
- If you have trouble bringing the dough together. Then consider adding just a tiny bit of milk, and your dough should start sticking together.
Recipe Variations
- Add some white chocolate chips to the recipe for a subtle yet sweet surprise in every bite.
- You can also add the zest of one lemon to the biscuit dough to make your biscuits slightly flavoured and tangy.
- If you’re a chocolate lover, then you can go ahead and add some rich cocoa powder and possibly even some dark chocolate chips to make this a completely chocolaty haven.
- Vanilla Essence makes every baked good better. But if you’re a fan of any other flavouring such as salted caramel or a coffee essence, then by all means go for it.
- Pieces of dried fruit also taste great in every bite of these biscuits. We recommend raisins, cranberries, figs, and apricots.
- If you want to add warmth to these biscuits, consider adding earthy spices such as nutmeg, ginger and cinnamon.
Serving Suggestions
If we were to guess, these biscuits were probably invented because somebody was craving some buttery soft homemade biscuits to have with their tea! These taste best served with a hot cup of tea, coffee or milk. But that doesn’t mean that they don’t taste great on their own as a snack.
Storage
Make ahead of time: There isn’t much you can do to be prepared ahead of time. All you can do is probably take out the butter from the fridge and make sure it’s at room temperature.
Store: At room temperature, these Fork biscuits will last about a week. Though make sure it is in a sealed air-tight bag or container. In the fridge, they’ll last a couple more days, but not more than that.
Freeze: You can freeze these baked goodies in the freezer, and they’ll last for up to a month. Just make sure that you separate them with baking paper or any other paper in an air-tight container or bag.
To reheat: Once you take out your biscuits, place them on a baking tray (lined with parchment paper) and bake for 3-5 minutes at 350° Fahrenheit. You can also use the microwave to reheat. Dampen a wet paper towel and wrap the biscuits individually. Then place them in the microwave for a couple of minutes.
Once the biscuits are out of the oven or microwave, you can brush them with some melted butter to freshen up their flavour.
Recipe FAQ
Yes, these biscuits are vegetarian. However, they are not vegan. If you’d like this recipe to be vegan then you can consider switching out the butter for some Flora. There is a variation of Flora butter that is made from plant-based oils and is an excellent vegan option.
If you do try making this recipe vegan and with flora butter, then don’t forget to let us know how it went in the comments. If you switched it out for any other butter or brand, then let us know about that too!
No worries! If you can’t find Caster sugar, or you just don’t have caster sugar at your house currently, you can use granulated sugar instead. We just need to grind the granulated sugar a tad bit, so the granules are the right grit for this recipe. To do that, You can use a coffee grinder, food processor or blender. Whilst grinding, make sure you don’t grind it to a powder-like density. Keep in mind, we’re aiming for something that falls between granulated and powdered sugar.
If you don’t have self-rising flour in the house, you can make some of your homes from scratch. Just add 1 teaspoon of baking powder to each 1 cup of all-purpose flour and whisk the baking powder and flour until it is well mixed. You can also sieve both ingredients together.
Yes, you can just add 1 teaspoon of baking powder and a pinch of salt to every cup of plain flour you will use.
For better results, I highly recommend using butter because it gives the shortbread its delicious taste and smell.
