Cheese and Pickle Sandwich is a rich, cheesy, and flavorful British sandwich that I LOVE so much. Grab 2 slices of cheddar cheese and a jar of Branston's Pickle, and let's make this easy sandwich.
Cheese and Pickle Sandwich
I am a big fan of this easy sandwich. The excellent balance between being rich, crunchy, and a bit salty makes this sandwich even more delectable.
I like to use a thick slice of extra mature cheddar since it has a tangier sharpness and crumblier texture. I found it perfect for this sandwich.
Of course, I cannot forget about the pickle from Branston's. This pickle is rich with different ingredients ranging from carrots to onions and a sweet sauce.
To sum it up, this sandwich is sweet and tangy because of the pickle; and salty with a fatty taste, all thanks to the cheddar.
Why I Love This Recipe
- It is a budget-friendly and 4-ingredient recipe you can quickly make at home. This recipe comes together in under ten minutes, a perfect sandwich for breakfast or lunch.
- I can add other ingredients— such as boiled eggs, and tuna, to the sandwich to make it even more mouth-watering.
What's in This Sandwich?
Cheddar Cheese. I used mature cheddar cheese but you may use
Branston's Pickle. In my opinion, this is the ideal pickle to use in this recipe because it is composed of sweet carrots, gherkins, rutabaga, onions, and cauliflower in a thick sweet sauce. It will give the salty, fatty flavor of cheddar cheese a vibrant sweet and tangy taste.
Bread. Is there even a sandwich without bread “sandwiching” the fillings? Use your favorite bread, I used white bread.
Butter. Aside from providing a rich flavor to the bread and the sandwich as a whole, butter also prevents the bread from getting soggy from all the sandwich ingredients being added.
How to Make Cheese and Pickle Sandwich?
One: Lay a slice of bread on a plate, top it with a slice of cheese, spread a tablespoon of Branston’s Pickle, then another slice of cheese, and Top it with the other slice of bread.
Two: Spread the outer sides of the sandwich with butter.
Three: Heat a frying pan on medium heat, put the sandwich, cook for 1-2 minutes on each side, then serve warm.
Top Tips!
- Use quality ingredients such as bread and cheddar cheese. I also recommend to using a thicker bread slices.
- You may toast the bread first before making the sandwich. However, I like to toast it after filling to allow the cheese to melt inside.
- Don't let the sandwich stay longer than necessary on the frying pan with the heat on because it will make that sandwich dry.
Some Variations
- You may add more fillings to your sandwich if you like. Adding mashed boiled egg, chopped green onions or sliced leftover turkey are among the most common sandwich ingredients that will work well with cheese and pickles.
- Cheddar cheese is the best for this recipe, but if it is unavailable at home, you may just use Colby or Swiss cheese. Both are good substitutes.

Also, the sweet and creamy taste of Elote Corn Salad will also stand as an excellent balance to the flavor of cheese and pickles in the sandwich.
