Cheese and Pickle Sandwich is a favorite dish in England, and rightfully so because it boasts a rich, cheesy, and flavorful taste that only the combination of cheddar cheese and Branston's Pickle can ever provide.

An excellent balance between being rich, crunchy, and acidic makes this sandwich even more delectable. This dish is an absolute British classic you should not skip to try making at home.

The recipe should feature a thick slice of cheddar, preferably the aged one, since it has a more tangy sharpness with a crumbly texture perfect for the sandwich. Of course, one cannot forget about the pickle from Branston's. This pickle is rich with different ingredients ranging from carrots to onions and a sweet sauce that will never disappoint. To sum it up, it is sweet and tangy because of the pickle; and salty with a fatty taste, all thanks to the cheddar.

When you think of sandwiches, they seem to be a dish that is ideal as a breakfast meal. You are not wrong, though. Sandwich, especially this Cheese and Pickle Sandwich, is a remarkable breakfast meal idea because it is satiating and will definitely keep your stomach full until lunch comes by.

This recipe can also be served as a snack in the afternoon when you have finished most of the tasks needed to be done for the day. They can easily be paired with a lot of beverages, from iced water to freshly squeezed fruity juice, making it a versatile dish to serve to anyone. Most people in Britain, however, prefer to eat this dish at lunchtime alongside onions, ham, pork pie, and boiled egg in what you would call a “Ploughman's lunch.”

Whenever you would like to serve this dish, it will be up to your decision. In fact, you can even have this sandwich as your midnight snack! It is a savory and delicious dish to munch on while staying up late, either browsing through the web or trying to keep up with backlogs from school.

    Why Does This Recipe Work?

Cheese and Cheddar Sandwich is not just an ideal recipe to make at home because of its superb taste but also because of the following reasons:

    • It is a budget-friendly and 4-ingredient recipe you can quickly make at home. This recipe comes together in under ten minutes, a perfect dish for when you are running late for school or an early appointment.
    • Cheesy, tangy, and delicious sandwich, which is a perfect meal idea for the whole family to share around.
    • You can add other ingredients— such as boiled eggs, and tuna, to the sandwich to make it even more mouth-watering.

    What's in This Recipe?

Cheddar Cheese. It will give your sandwich the wholesome sharp, cheesy, pungent flavor that you wouldn't like missing from your sandwich. It also easily balances the taste of the pickle in the dish.

Branston's Pickle. It is the ideal pickle to use in this recipe because it is composed of sweet carrots, gherkins, rutabaga, onions, and cauliflower in a thick sweet sauce. It will give the salty, fatty flavor of cheddar cheese a vibrant sweet and tangy taste.

Bread. Is there even a sandwich without bread “sandwiching” the fillings? Use bread to envelop the cheddar cheese and pickle.

Butter. Aside from providing a rich flavor to the bread and the sandwich as a whole, butter also prevents the bread from getting soggy from all the sandwich ingredients being added.

Spread the outer sides of the sandwich with butter.

Heat a frying pan on medium heat, put the sandwich, cook for 1-2 minutes on each side, then serve warm.

    Top Tips!

    • Use quality ingredients such as bread and cheddar cheese. Use thicker bread that does not easily get lumpy and cheddar cheese that is aged enough to have the desired cheesy, fatty, and salty taste.
    • Don't add too much sauce to the Branston's Pickle to avoid making the bread too soft for anyone's liking.
    • You may toast the bread first before making the sandwich.
    • Don't let the sandwich stay longer than necessary on the frying pan with the heat on because it will make that dish dry.

    Some Variations

    • You may add more fillings to your sandwich if you like. Adding mashed boiled egg, chopped green onions or sliced leftover turkey are among the most common sandwich ingredients that will work well with cheese and pickles.
    • If you like experimenting with different ingredients, try swapping your regular bread with Buckwheat Flatbread or Chickpea Flatbread, especially if you are aiming for bread that is low in carbs and free from gluten.
    • Cheddar cheese is the best cheese for this recipe, but if it is not available at home, you may just use Colby cheese or Swiss cheese. Both are milder than Cheddar cheese, but they are good enough substitutes. If you are looking for a version of cheddar cheese with almost the same taste but with a softer texture, use American cheese instead.

    Serving Suggestions

Indulge yourself with this Cheese and Pickle Sandwich alongside sweet potato fries. The salty and tangy taste of the sandwich will deliciously clash with the salty and sweet flavor of the fries.

The sweet and creamy taste of macaroni salad will also stand as an excellent balance to the flavor of cheese and pickles in the sandwich. You can also pair this sandwich with fresh orange juice.

    Storage

This recipe is not freezer-friendly, but you can store it at room temperature inside an airtight container for three days; longer than that, and the sandwich will already spoil.

Branston's Pickle is good; however, I prefer gherkin.
