Fish Taco Seasoning is a dry rub made with a blend of the right spices to jazz up any fish you plan on devouring. It’s also quick and easy to make. It just requires a few seasonings you probably already have at home.
Fish Taco Seasoning Recipe
I confess that this homemade fish taco seasoning really elevates my Taco Tuesday to the next level!
What I really like about making my own homemade seasoning is that I can adjust the taste to my liking, and I am totally in control over the ingredients I use.
Everyone loves some spicy fish with fresh, crisp veggies wrapped up inside a nice soft tortilla. But do you know what makes for the perfect Fish Taco? Fish Taco Seasoning is prepared through a unique blend of spices and herbs especially chosen to marinade all kinds of fish.
So it’s time to knock away the store-bought seasoning mix, which are often loaded with excess salt but barely any flavour. Instead, whip up a nice big jar of some homemade Fish Taco Seasoning that is rich in taste and herbs.
Ingredients
- Dried coriander leaves: I love them for their piney flavor.
- Dried oregano: You probably already have it at home.
- Garlic powder: Garlic flavor goes so well with fish.
- Dried Basil: I use it because it is aromatic and has a slightly spicy flavor.
- Salt: Just what you have at home.
- Cayenne pepper: To add a spicy kick.
- Ground ginger: I like it for its hot, slightly sharp flavour.
- Dried lemon zest: Can be accumulated from lemons overtime or bought from the store.

Variations & Substitutions
Although this recipe offers a great combination of spices, here are a few additions you can try:
- Cumin: It provides an earthy flavour to savoury dishes. Toast the cumin for optimum flavour.
- Smoked Paprika: Offers a hint of flavour that is smoked and yet both sweet and salty.
- Onion Powder: Gives your fish the solid yet sweet flavours of onions
- Chilli powder: It makes a great addition to your tacos if you’re a fan of spicy hot food.
- Dried dillweed: It’s got the bitterness of parsley and sweetness of celery, easily an excellent choice for seafood.
How To Make Fish Taco Seasoning?
Mix all the spices until they are well combined, store them in a glass jar, and keep the jar in a dry place such as your kitchen cabinet.
Your homemade seasoning is now ready to spice up your Fish Tacos!
Tip: My secret to maintaining a good taste and flavour in my seasoning mix is to drop in a few dried beans in the seasoning jar, preventing any moisture build-up. The beans will absorb it.
Expert Tips
- Using funnel is a good idea. It helps pour ground spices into jars without making a mess.
- If you feel that the seasoning you’ve mixed up isn’t performing as well as it used to, it could just have gotten old. Usually, a whiff will tell the difference. If it doesn’t smell as strong as it used to, it’s probably a good idea to make another batch. Remember the stronger the smell, the stronger the flavour.
- These measurements for each ingredient can be altered as per your liking. So, if you and your family are a fan of some spicy fish, you can up the quantity of the cayenne pepper you are using.
How Much Of This Seasoning Should I Use?
How much seasoning you add to the fish you’re going to put in the tacos is totally up to you. However, immersing 1 lb of fish in two whole tablespoons of this seasoning is generally a good thumb rule to follow if you’re making Fish Tacos.
It could also be slightly more or less depending on how well coated you like your fish in spices and what you’re pairing it with.
Fish To Use In Tacos
This seasoning works with right about any white fish you like. However, just for the sake of it, our favourites would definitely be COD, Tilapia and Mahi Mahi.
How Do I Use This Fish Taco Seasoning?
This seasoning recipe is specially curated to be used as a dry rub. The best way to go about it is to firstly ensure that your fish is patted dry.
Afterwards, you can rub the seasoning all over the fish with your hands. Finally, place it onto a parchment sheet in the oven and let it bake for 10 minutes at 400 °F.
You can also broil your fish for a few minutes if you’d like. Alternatively, you can use it as a marinade for other dishes as well.
Use Fish Taco Spice Mix In
I like to smother this Fish Taco seasoning over white fish such as cod and savour its goodness wrapped up in a soft tortilla.
Nonetheless, there are many other ways you can use this seasoning. Just add a couple spoonfuls of this seasoning to homemade cream cheese and enjoy it as sandwich spread.
And how can I forget? It tastes great, sprinkled on some freshly made warm popcorn such as my spicy popcorn recipe.
Also, add it to fish rice, sprinkle it over your Mediterranean fish stew, season your fish patties, or use it in the baked cod with parmesan marinade.
How To Store
Make ahead of time: You can quickly mix up a batch of this seasoning whenever you’d like. And it’ll easily be useable for 6-8 months without any change in flavour.
Store: Just keep this seasoning stored, in a cool, dry place, out of the direct reach of sunlight.
