Best Bread For French Toast
You can use any type of bread (white, french, Italian ) you want in making this recipe. However, for an excellent result, it is preferable to use thick slices of bread that can hold up when dipping them in the milk mixture and frying them.
Thin bread slices get mushy quickly when you dunk them in the milk mixture.
The Secret To Perfect French Toast
- Use the right ratio of milk to eggs; too many eggs will lead to eggy bread, while too much milk will lead to mushy bread.
- For best results, use old bread or stale bread. Stale bread absorbs the egg custard better than fresh bread.
- Don't cook on high heat. Cooking on high heat will lead to burning the bread from the outside while still soggy from the inside.
- Soak the bread long enough to absorb the egg mixture.
- Preheat the frying pan before cooking the toast; otherwise, it will stick to the pan. You can also use a non-stick pan if you like.
Storage
To store: Keep leftovers in the fridge for 1-2 days and reheat in the microwave.
Freeze: French toast freezes beautifully, that's why it is perfect for making ahead of time; you can make a big patch and put wax paper between the slices and keep in an airtight container in the freezer for 1-2 months.
