I always loved Sweet French Toast over savoury one; I don't know why, maybe because I have a sweet tooth. However, The first time I ever ate savoury French toast, I wouldn't say I liked it; no wonder they call it eggy bread!

About Sourdough French Toast
Sourdough French Toast is a popular dish on the menus of English restaurants. We can never blame people's love for this dish though because it offers one of the most delicious and savory variations of french toasts out there.
Add to that is the sourdough bread's excellent sturdier texture compared to other bread; hence you are promised the perfect texture you can ever get from a french toast.
Taste & Texture of Sourdough French Toast
This french toast is soaked in an egg mixture rich in milk, heavy cream and flavored with cinnamon and nutmeg. You can only imagine the superb taste and savory it brings and the slight spice beneath it.
The slight tang coming from the sourdough works excellently with the mild spice coming from the cinnamon and nutmeg.
The texture is that of a perfect toast as well, creamy on the inside and a slightly crunchy texture on the outside with perfectly crisped edges.
When To Serve This Dish?
There is no perfect timing for you to serve this dish other than early in the morning before a busy day starts. A serving or two of this french toast paired with classic black coffee or a glass of hot milk will surely keep you going for the whole morning until lunch comes by.

Ingredients
Sourdough Bread. I used soft white sourdough bread; however, feel free to use any sourdough bread you prefer. You can also use 2-3 days old stale bread you already have in your pantry.
Eggs. With the presence of eggs in this recipe, the toast will not be too lumpy, and eggs also give richness in flavor.
Whole Milk. It is the most responsible for the creamy and rich texture of the french toast.
Heavy Cream. It assists the whole milk in improving the taste and texture of this recipe.
Cinnamon and Ground Nutmeg. A little spice in this recipe will surely make your french toast one of a kind, all thanks to cinnamon and ground nutmeg.
Vanilla Extract. A florally sweet and woody flavor will be nice for this recipe; hence add a little vanilla extract to the egg mixture.
Butter. Cool your french toast in melted butter for a perfect crisper texture on the outside.
Maple Syrup: for serving. The perfect finishing touch, maple syrup!

Variations & Substitutions
- Think beyond maple syrup. There are other toppings you can add to your toast, such as strawberry jam, blueberry jam, mashed banana, or even simple Nutella.
- If you want a sweeter version of this recipe, you may consider adding brown sugar to the egg and milk mixture. The sweetness will mix well with the mild spice and tangy flavor of your french toast.
- Make savoury french toast instead by topping with savour toppings such as cheese, herbed butter, salt and pepper or yoghurt.
How To Make Sourdough French Toast?
One (Prepare the custard): Whisk together milk, eggs, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract and heavy cream until combined.
Two (Soak the bread): Place 1-2 slices of the bread into the mixture, allow it to soak up the egg mixture for a few seconds, then flip it. Allow the other side to soak in the mixture for a few seconds as well.
Three (Cook the bread): Heat the butter in a non-stick pan. Once melted, add the soaked bread to the pan, cook for 2 minutes or until the bottom is golden. Flip it and cook for 1-2 minutes more or until it is golden brown. Repeat soaking and cooking the remaining bread.
Four (Serve): Transfer the toast to a serving plate, top with maple syrup, butter and your favourite fruits, serve warm.
Top Tips!
- Soak thick slices of sourdough bread in an egg and milk mixture. French toast's exquisite bite is lost when cut thinly. So go thick, not half-inch thin. More bread per slice offers a deeper bite. It also means more eggs and milk can be sponged in each slice.
- Add a minimal amount of oil alongside your butter. The added cooking oil will prevent your butter from burning but don't skip butter in this recipe as it gives more depth and richness to your french toast.
- Make sure the pan is hot enough before putting in your toast. If the pan is not well heated yet, chances are your toast will stick to the pan's surface, ruining its appearance altogether.
How To Serve
A bowl of fresh fruits on the side of your stack of French toast will enhance the flavor even further. Any fruit you fancy, such as berries, grapes, bananas or peaches, will go well with your dish.
Considering that eggs are a morning staple, why not jazz up your French toast with a generous portion of Scrambled Eggs With Smoked Salmon or Dippy Eggs With Soldiers on the side too?
Personally, I like serving this dish with a cup of White Chocolate Latte or Chocolate Bubble Tea.
