Sourdough French Toast Recipe
I always loved Sweet French Toast over savoury one; I don't know why, maybe because I have a sweet tooth. However, The first time I ever ate savoury French toast, I wouldn't say I liked it; no wonder they call it eggy bread!
However, Let's talk about this sourdough French toast recipe:
This french toast is soaked in an egg mixture rich in milk, heavy cream and flavored with cinnamon and nutmeg. You can only imagine the superb taste it brings and the slight spice beneath it.
I also like that the slight tang coming from the sourdough works excellently with the mild spice coming from the cinnamon and nutmeg. I prefer to use stale sourdough over fresh one, I find it gives better results.
The texture is that of a perfect toast as well, creamy on the inside and a slightly crunchy texture on the outside with perfectly crisped edges.
What is more exciting about this recipe is the fact that you can easily pair it with any topping you prefer; mine is maple syrup.

Ingredients
Note: This is an overview of the ingredients. See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
Sourdough Bread. I used soft white sourdough bread; I like to keep it 2-3 days before using it. However, feel free to use any sourdough bread you prefer or any old stale bread you already have in your pantry.
Eggs. I use 4 large eggs to make the custard, in which we will soak the french toast.
Whole Milk. It is the most responsible for the creamy and rich texture of the french toast.
Heavy Cream. It assists the whole milk in improving the taste and texture of this recipe.
Cinnamon and Ground Nutmeg. A little spice in this recipe will surely make your french toast one of a kind, I like to use cinnamon and ground nutmeg.
Vanilla Extract. I like to add a little vanilla extract to the egg mixture to enhance the flavor.
Butter. I use butter to cook my french toast for a perfect crispy texture on the outside.
Maple Syrup: For serving. The perfect finishing touch, maple syrup!
How To Make Sourdough French Toast?
One (Prepare the custard): Whisk together milk, eggs, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract and heavy cream until combined.
Two (Soak the bread): Place 1-2 slices of the bread into the mixture, allow it to soak up the egg mixture for a few seconds, then flip it. Allow the other side to soak in the mixture for a few seconds as well.
Three (Cook the bread): Heat the butter in a non-stick pan. Once melted, add the soaked bread to the pan, cook for 2 minutes or until the bottom is golden. Flip it and cook for 1-2 minutes more or until it is golden brown. Repeat soaking and cooking the remaining bread.
Four (Serve): Transfer the toast to a serving plate, top with maple syrup, butter and your favourite fruits, serve warm.
Top Tips!
- Soak thick slices of sourdough bread in an egg and milk mixture. French toast's exquisite bite is lost when cut thinly. So go thick.
- Add a minimal amount of oil alongside your butter. The added cooking oil will prevent your butter from burning but don't skip butter in this recipe as it gives more depth and richness to your french toast.
- Make sure the pan is hot enough before putting in your toast. If the pan is not well heated yet, chances are your toast will stick to the pan's surface, ruining its appearance altogether.
Variations & Substitutions
- Think beyond maple syrup. There are other toppings you can add to your toast, such as strawberry jam, blueberry jam, mashed banana, or even simple Nutella.
- If you want a sweeter version of this recipe, you may consider adding brown sugar to the egg and milk mixture.
- Make savoury french toast instead by topping with savour toppings such as cheese, herbed butter, salt and pepper or yoghurt.
How To Serve
A bowl of fresh fruits on the side of your stack of French toast will go well with your dish.
Considering that eggs are a morning staple, why not jazz up your French toast with a generous portion of Scrambled Eggs With Smoked Salmon or Dippy Eggs With Soldiers on the side too?
Personally, I like serving this dish with a cup of White Chocolate Latte or Chocolate Bubble Tea.
Recipe FAQs
Yes! After the slices have been baked and cooled, place wax paper between each slice and wrap the bundle in aluminum foil before placing it in a freezer bag. It is possible to keep it frozen for 1-2 months.
You can use brioche, sourdough, french bread, Challah, and white bread. However, the best choice will be sourdough bread because it has the best texture ever.
They are the same, except the sweet ingredients such as sugar and vanilla are replaced with salt and pepper in the savoury French toast!

It was delicious; I made it with gluten-free sourdough bread and topped it with some berries.
