What is Guacamole?
Before the 16th Century, the Aztecs enjoyed mashed avocados with some spices. Soon enough, the Spaniards colonized the Aztec Civilization located in present-day Mexico. They, too, couldn’t resist the ‘āhuacamolli’, the original Nahuati word that got altered to ‘Guacamole’ by the Europeans. They even gave alterations to the dish by adding in tomatoes, onions, and lime juice.
Due to the inability of avocados to grow in Europe, the dish stayed in America and is an extremely popular dip enjoyed with tacos, toast, potatoes, eggs with many packaged varieties and recipes available throughout the continent.

How to make this healthy 4 Ingredient Guacamole recipe?
Preparation:
Firstly cut the avocado in half, and scoop out the fulsome avocado using a big spoon. For any reason, if you struggle to scoop the avocado out because it’s not as smooth as you expected it to be, then proceed to somehow separate the skin of the avocado from the fruit. Even if it requires any methods like peeling or chopping, go for it.
Now go ahead and chop the onions finely. Remember, the raw pieces of onion will be felt on the tongue, so keep them small. Lastly, squeeze out the lime juice and set it aside for later.
Method:
In a mixing bowl, pour the lemon juice on the avocados, and use a fork to mash them up. The consistency needs to be that of a dip, so mash accordingly.
Next, stir in the chopped red onions and add salt to your preference; mix until combined.
Lastly, transfer the Guacamole into a serving bowl and serve.
Top Tips
- If the avocados are really not ripe, it’ll be challenging to derive a dip like consistency from it. In that case, wrap the avocados in tinfoil and plop it in an oven with the temperature set to 200°F. Wait for ten minutes, or however long it takes to soften the avocado. You will be able to continue with the recipe as usual.
- If you’re making this for the first time, then go ahead and add a small amount of salt before you taste the mixture. If you think it requires more, only then add more salt.
- The quantities of the ingredients will decide the tanginess (more lemon juice) or saltiness (more salt) of the Guacamole. Keep in mind what you’ll be relishing this side dish with (tortillas, veggies etc.) while mixing the ingredients together.
- You can serve this dish immediately or let it sit for 15-30 minutes in the fridge to allow the avocados to soak up all the flavors, then serve.
Recipe Variations
Guacamole is a dish that can be altered according to taste, culture, seasoning, and many more things. While some like to keep it simple, others go as far as adding peppers, tomatoes, garlic, chillies and so on into their recipes. It’s really up to you how you’d like to season your mashed avocados.
Ways To Use Guacamole
- This dish can be used as a spread in a sandwich and grilled for best taste.

Storing and Freezing
This dish should last a good 2-3 days in the refrigerator. Nevertheless, if you want it to last 2-3 months, you can also freeze it. Beware; the taste of the Guacamole will change when it has been frozen for such an extended time.
There are two ways you can go about freezing this recipe. Firstly, you can seal it in a zip-log bag, push out all the air from the bag and place it in the freezer. Alternatively, you can pour it into a container. After flattening the top, pour in a skinny layer of olive oil, close the lid and freeze.
Also, if you really are going to freeze the Guacamole, avoid adding any onions. Whenever you decide to take it, thaw it and chop onions to add into the mixture.
