What is Chocolate Lush? It is four layers of deliciousness. The bottom layer is a crust made with pecan, flour, and butter. The second layer is a rich cream cheese layer. The third layer is a delicious chocolate pudding layer. The fourth layer is an extra rich layer of whipped cream.
This popular dessert has so many names such as Chocolate Lush Dessert, Sex in a Pan, Slush Cake, Chocolate Lasagna, or Chocolate Fudge Layered Lush. You can also prepare it with different flavours such as Lemon Lush, Banana Lush, or Strawberry Cake Lush. This dessert is delicious with all these flavours.
What's in Chocolate Lush?
For the crust:
- All-purpose flour
- Pecans, finely chopped
- Butter, softened
For the cream cheese layer:
- Cream cheese, softened
- Powdered sugar
- Heavy whipping cream, divided
- Vanilla extract
For the chocolate pudding layer:
- Instant chocolate pudding mix
- Milk
For the top layer:
- Heavy cream
- Chocolate chips. or grated chocolate
- Chopped pecans, for topping
How to make Chocolate Lush?
Making the crust layer: In a bowl, combine, flour, chopped pecan, and melted butter, mix well then place the mixture in a 20x20 cm baking pan. Distribute the mixture evenly in the pan then press on the mixture using the palm of your hands.
Bake the crust on 180C/350F for 10-15 minutes then allow it to cool down.
Once the crust is completely cooled, begin layering up the dessert with the creamy layers.
Making the cream cheese layer: In a small bowl, whip the cream using an electric whisk.
In another bowl, combine cream cheese, vanilla extract, and powdered sugar using the electric whisk until the mixture becomes fluffy.
Fold the whipped cream in the cream cheese mixture, stir until combined. Spread the cream cheese mixture in an even layer on top of the crust.
Making the chocolate pudding layer: In a medium-size bowl, whisk chocolate pudding and milk until the mixture thicken. Spread the chocolate pudding carefully on top of the cream cheese layer.
Making the whipped cream layer (top layer): Whip the cream well using an electric whisk until become thick. Spread over the chocolate pudding layer.
Topping: Sprinkle chopped pecans and chocolate chips on top of the chocolate lush.
Then refrigerate the pan for 3-4 hours or overnight.
Top Tips:
- You can top the Chocolate Lush with nuts, chocolate chips, grated chocolate, dried fruits, caramel, or chocolate sauce, melted chocolate, marshmallows, or chopped fresh fruits such as strawberries.
- Keep Chocolate Lush in the fridge until serving.
- If you like your crust to be chocolaty, add one tablespoon of cocoa powder to the crust mixture.
- Make sure to buy instant pudding mix, not the one that needs cooking.
- If you want to make this dessert extra flavourful, add two tablespoons of smooth peanut butter to the cream cheese mixture. It gives the mixture a lovely peanut butter flavour.
- You can also make chocolate lush with Oreo crust by using Oreo biscuits in making the crust instead of flour and pecan.
