What's In This Recipe?
“See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.”
Let's take a look at the 3 ingredients you need to have to make the recipe:
Self-rising Flour. It gives your rolls the shape and structure it requires in the baking process. This type of flour already helps the dough to rise without having to add yeast.
Tip: I usually make homemade self-rising flour by adding 2 cups of all-purpose flour in a bowl and whisk it with 2 teaspoons baking powder and ½ teaspoon salt. You may double or triple the amount!
Whole Milk. It assists in combining all the dry ingredients in the recipe and making the rolls fluffy with a touch of creamy taste as well.
Tip: Use plant-based milk such as almond milk or soy milk to make this recipe dairy free.
Mayonnaise. Mayonnaise gives the main flavor of this recipe, thus its name. This ingredient adds a mild, clean flavor, a nice tart-salt balance with barely robust hints of mustard to the recipe.
Sugar (optional). This is an optional ingredient. You may add just 1 teaspoon of sugar to the mixture to enhance the flavor.
How to Make Mayonnaise Rolls?
Before starting, preheat the oven to 180C / 350 F and line a 10 cup muffin pan with paper liners.
One: In a mixing bowl, whisk flour and sugar (if using).
Two: Mix in milk and mayonnaise until well combined.
Three: Scoop the batter into the muffin cups. Bake for 12-15 minutes, then let them cool.
Top Tips!
- Grease the paper liners with butter before filling them with the mayonnaise roll batter so that you can easily remove the baked goods once the baking process is done.
- Do not overfill the paper liners with the batter because it will spill once the batter rises inside the oven.
- Let the rolls cool down for five minutes before serving.
Variations
- Before baking, sprinkle some poppy seeds over the rolls. These seeds will add a nutty flavor to your rolls, and even slight crispiness.
- Add shredded cheese to the batter for a cheesy taste.
Serving Suggestions
These rolls are a great accompaniment for your homemade soups such as chicken noodle soup, cabbage soup, Molokia soup, chicken rice soup.
For a simpler way of serving your rolls, serve them with your favorite jam and a bit of melted butter.
For beverage suggestions, I recommend green tea, iced white chocolate mocha or chocolate bubble tea would be an excellent pair depending on when you are going to serve them.
Storage
I don't advise Freezing these mayonnaise rolls as it will make the texture dry. You can refrigerate for up to three days.
Make-Ahead of Time: I make the batter ahead of time and freeze it until I am ready to bake it in the oven. I thaw it in the fridge overnight when I am already going to bake it.
