My Boom Boom Shrimp is an incredibly easy and delicious dish in which I dip jumbo shrimp into a tempura batter, fry until crispy, and serve it with the best sweet and spicy homemade Boom Boom Sauce ever.
Boom Boom Shrimp
This Super tasty dish, also called Bang Bang Shrimp, is an Asian-inspired dish and my favourite part of this dish is the sauce; it is SO delicious and made with peanut butter, mayonnaise and sweet chilli sauce. YUM!
I often get asked, is boom boom shrimp spicy? My answer is that the shrimp itself is not spicy; however, the sauce is spicy, but you can control how much heat you add to the sauce.
I prefer to serve the sauce separately because my daughter loves to dip the shrimp in the sauce, and also, this dish stores better this way. However, You can drizzle the sauce over your shrimp instead.
Seriously, I like this recipe for many reasons: It is not as much of a headache as it seems, given the amazing taste, it is ready in less than 20 minutes, and it is a quick appetizer that's a staple at any house party I have.
So let's unveil the secret of this scrumptious dish without any further delay!
Ingredients
Note: This is an overview of the ingredients. See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
Shrimp. I used large-sized deveined and cleaned Shrimp. If you are using frozen Shrimp, make sure that you defrost it before using it.
For The Tempura Batter: I used all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder and salt. All these ingredients will ensure a crispy exterior and crunchy texture of the shrimp.
Vegetable Oil. To fry the shrimp I used vegetable oil; you may use your favourite oil.
For the Boom Boom Sauce, I used Mayonnaise, creamy peanut butter, sweet chilli sauce, and some salt and pepper. These ingredients add a creamy texture and a delicious, sweet, nutty flavor to the sauce.
How To Make Boom Boom Shrimp?
One: In a large mixing bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, cornstarch, and salt until combined. Add water to the mixture and whisk well.
Two: In a large frying pan, heat the oil.
Three: Now, dip the shrimps in the flour mixture (one by one), then put them into the pan in a single layer, and fry for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
Pro Tip: You may need to cook your shrimp in batches if your frying pan isn't large.
Four: After frying the shrimp, drain it on a paper towel.
Five - Make the Boom Boom Sauce: In a bowl, mix together mayonnaise, peanut butter, sweet chili sauce and salt and pepper until well combined. Put the sauce in a serving bowl and serve the sauce with the Shrimp.
Variations & Substitutions
- Keeping the rest of the recipe the same, just throw in small bites of chicken instead of Shrimp if you are not a big fan of seafood. It will surely taste just as awesome.
- The Boom Boom Sauce can be tailored to your taste by adding spicy seasonings like cajun or cayenne, sweet ingredients like honey, or the tangy citrus or vinegar, or anything else like Worcestershire sauce, etc., that you like.
Serving Suggestions
This dish is, of course, best served hot and freshly prepared. A delicious salad such as Wakame Seaweed Salad or Smoked Salmon Pasta Salad on the side makes for a great complimentary dish.
I love to serve this dish with a big batch of freshly fried Belgian Fries.
You can serve the dish with any of your favourite dips - be it mayonnaise, ketchup, Cilantro Garlic Sauce, Bagel Dip, Haydari (Turkish Yogurt Dipping Sauce), or anything else.
Serve with Mushroom Fried Rice for a complete meal.
Storage
To Store: leftover shrimps can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three days. Store the shrimps in shallow airtight containers or resealable plastic bags.
Pro Tip: Make sure that you store the shrimp and the remaining sauce separately.
To Freeze: Place the shrimp in freezing bags or containers and then keep them in the freezer. They should keep for up to as long as 3 to 6 months.
Reheating Instructions: The dish is best reheated in an air fryer. They will be crisp just like before in about three to four minutes. The next best option is a convection oven followed by a regular oven. Avoid a microwave oven, however.
Recipe FAQs
Yes, you can absolutely bake them if you are looking for a healthier option that is less loaded with calories and fats as compared to other seafood options. Swapping out the flours with breadcrumbs might be an option that you may want to look into when doing this.
For the most part, both the sauces are similar. The only difference is that the Boom Boom Sauce is spicier because of the Chilli Sauce. Yum Yum Sauce tends to be more on the sweeter side.
