    History of Shrimp Salad

Alison Roman has written for The New York Times that shrimp salad was introduced in San Francisco, California, in the early 1900s. However, the shrimp salad in those times was named after its original creator, thus bearing the name Shrimp Louie. The recipe of this variation also mainly contains shrimp, lettuce, mayonnaise, boiled egg, or what you'd call Thousand Island Dressing.

The mentioned Thousand Island Dressing typically includes lemon juice, olive oil, paprika, and other seasonings.

Eventually, as time goes by, the recipe for Shrimp Louie got altered from one restaurant to another and from one household to the next. Along with the introduction of the sandwich, the addition of butter and yogurt is one of the alterations. The shrimp salad has a creamy texture, perfect for a sandwich; thus, it goes well with a slice or two of bread.

    Why Does This Recipe Work?

There are many ways one can prepare a Shrimp Salad Sandwich, but this particular recipe works better because of the following reasons:

    • The whole dish is healthy and easy to make.
    • The ingredients are not expensive, and you can find them in the nearest market.
    • Shrimp salad sandwich is versatile to eat for lunch, dinner, or even at snack time.

    Ingredients of The Recipe

    • Shrimp: As the base ingredient of the recipe, shrimp will give the whole dish a sweet and salty taste. When choosing a shrimp to make the Shrimp Salad Sandwich, it is best to use shrimps already deveined and peeled, which means that the shrimps' shells and dark dorsal veins are already gone. The size of the shrimp also depends on one's likings, but it is best to buy medium size shrimps since it will suit the sandwich well.
    • Butter: The rich flavor and creamy texture of butter add to the satisfaction that the shrimp salad sandwich offers.
    • Seasonings: paprika, salt, and ground black pepper. No matter how many additions you add to the salad, the taste isn't the same without the traditional seasonings. Paprika, salt, and ground black pepper bring out the aroma and flavor of the dish just like what it does for the other food.
    • Lemon Juice: Lemon juice does not only enhance the taste of the dish by adding sweet and savory flavor. It also gives a fresh and clean taste to the whole food.
    • Parsley: It has a fresh taste perfect to complement the lemon juice for the salad mixture. It will also brighten the flavor of the shrimp salad.
    • Bell Pepper: It is just another ingredient that will add color and flavor to the salad, similar to what the other seasonings provide.
    • Mayonnaise: The shrimp salad will come out as dry without the creamy texture of mayonnaise. Mayonnaise is the one responsible for the more significant contribution of the cream in the dish.
    • Greek Yogurt: This type of yogurt has less sweetener and thicker consistency. It will help mayonnaise provide a rich and creamy texture.
    • Green Onions: Add a crunchy texture to the salad, along with a mildly sweet tone that may seem unnoticeable.
    • Chopped Pickles: Top the salad with something green! Pickles have salty and sour tastes that will surely complement the other flavor in the salad.
    • Hot Dog Buns: What is a sandwich without bread or buns? Hot dog buns will surely envelop the creamy goodness within its hold.

    Recipe FAQs

What shrimp is the best for the shrimp salad sandwich?

It is best to buy the frozen shrimp from the market with its shells and dark dorsal veins removed. Such a type of shrimp will save you time from deveining it, and it also offers a good quality when you combine it with the other ingredients. Frozen shrimp allows you to keep leftovers in the freezer as well in case you fancy cooking another batch of salad.

The texture of my Sandwich is too dry for my liking; what should I do?

Mayonnaise and Greek yogurt are most responsible for making the salad creamy and less dry, so adding more of these ingredients would be the best. It is also better to varnish butter on your hot dog buns to give them a smoother and silkier texture.
