Have you ever tried chicken livers before? Believe me, they are super delicious. Today, I am sharing how to make sauteed chicken livers with onion and pepper in just 30 minutes! A super flavorful dish that is best served with pita bread or just green salad.
Sauteed Chicken Livers
I love pan-fried chicken livers; my mother used to cook them in so many different ways, such as Grilled Chicken Livers With Garlic And Lemon.
What I love about this recipe is that it is simple, easy to make and makes a wonderful, quick lunch or weeknight dinner. I also like adding bell pepper and onion; they add color, texture and flavor to this dish.
Ingredients
All the measurements are listed in the recipe card below.
- Chicken livers: They are so soft and tender. To choose fresh chicken livers, look for the ones that are plump, glossy and don't have a smell. The brown livers indicate that they are not fresh.
- Bell pepper: I used yellow and red bell peppers.
- Onions and garlic: I like to use fresh onion and garlic to flavor this dish.
- Seasonings: I use Ground black pepper, Chili powder and salt.
- Butter: I use butter to saute the onion, garlic, bell pepper and chicken livers.
- Apple cider vinegar: I add just 1 tablespoon for extra flavor.
How To Wash Chicken Livers
It is important to wash the livers before cooking them. Personally, I soak chicken livers in water mixed with 1 tablespoon of vinegar for 10 minutes, then wash them thoroughly with water. This process helps in reducing the liver smell.
How To Saute Chicken Livers With Onion And Pepper
One: Firstly, wash the chicken liver.
Two: Chop the pepper and mince the garlic and onion.
Three: Heat the butter In a pan over medium heat, along with chopped pepper, minced onion and garlic. Cook for 2-3 minutes or until the pepper softens.
Four: Once the previous mixture softens, add the chicken liver and cook for 2-3 minutes, then add the apple cider vinegar, black pepper, chilli powder and salt, lower the heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes or until the livers are fully cooked.
Tip: USDA Food Safety advised that chicken livers will be completely cooked once the internal temperature reaches 165°F (73.9°C); it will still be pink from the inside.
Top Tips!
- Don't over-stir the liver while cooking because it is so soft and may get mushed easily.
- Don’t overcook chicken livers; once the internal temperature reaches 165°F, it is done; otherwise, it will turn out dry!
How To Serve
I usually serve this dish with Gyro Bread (Greek Pita Bread) and some Buttered Peas.
Here are some other suggestions Roasted Green Beans and Carrots, Crispy Herb Roasted Potatoes or Malfouf Salad.
